Senior Research / Test Engineer

Position Description

In this position, you will have broad responsibilities. You will have access to a state of the art testing facility, and will be responsible for adding and modifying the test equipment as necessary. The primary responsibility will include design and execution of experiments, enabling the company to meet its technical development objectives. As Sr. Test Engineer or Technical Specialist, you will work with the Chief Engineer to oversee testing activities, interface with engineers/technicians, coordinate testing, assign resources, analyze and present data to management. Responsibilities will include test planning, engine testing, instrumentation (specification, set up, and calibration), dyno set up, data evaluation and presentation of results.

 

Specifically, the Test Engineer will:

Conduct tests using dynamometer system. This will include overseeing a technician to make engine modifications, using control software to operate the engine and dynamometer, and then performing analysis of data.

Select and install (or oversee installation of) equipment as necessary to improve the test and dynamometer system.

Make (or oversee) basic modifications to the LabView control software, as necessary.

Analyze engine data using Matlab or other tools. Present data to management.

Develop in-depth understanding of engine operation; develop hypotheses for how to improve performance in areas of efficiency, power output, durability, and emissions.

Develop testing plan to test hypotheses

 

Requirements

Qualifications:

MS (or PhD, preferred) in Engineering with a minimum of 5-years engine testing experience.

Ability to set up and operate a small engine dyno from scratch including hardware and software.

Experience with LabView, Matlab, and data acquisition hardware setup and calibration

Excellent understanding of thermodynamics including Diesel, Otto, Miller, and Atkinson cycles.

Diesel and Gasoline Engine test and calibration experience (preferred)

Design of Experiment, and ability to set up test plans to validate design of complex mechanical systems

Good knowledge of testing equipment and suppliers.
